On a gondola or a wall bay, the job is vertical illumination on the facings — even, shadow-free, and repeated identically across every shelf. This page covers when to wash a shelf with a bar and when to accent it with a spot, and the real specifications behind both.
Wash it with a bar when the whole shelf has to read evenly — packaged goods, cosmetics, bottles, a wall of small items. One linear fitting does in a single run what would take six spots, and it does it without scallops between the pools.
Accent it with a spot when one product has to come off the shelf — a promotion, a new line, a hero SKU. A narrow beam with contrast around it is what makes a customer reach for one item out of fifty.
Use both. Most shopfitting that looks expensive is a bar washing the shelf plus a hand full of spots on the promotional facings. That combination is also what lets a store change the emphasis weekly without re-wiring anything.

Cut to the shelf, not to a stock length. Bars are made to order — up to 2500 mm on the magnetic CHIA8428-1 and up to 2000 mm on the recessed CHIA8428D and the suspended CHIA8428-4. Ordering the exact internal width means the light runs edge to edge instead of stopping short and leaving dark corners.
Plan the power feed before the joinery closes. Every run needs a driver, and on a long constant-voltage run a single feed at one end can visibly drop output at the far end. Tell us the run length and total wattage and we will size the driver with headroom and tell you where the feed points go.
Count fixtures by beam, not by wattage. Work out the pool each head throws at your mounting height and space them so the pools overlap by about a third. This is the difference between a shelf that looks lit and a shelf that looks striped.
Uniform is not the same as good. A perfectly flat wash makes premium products look ordinary — a point we argued in Why Uniform Lighting Can Make Premium Products Look Ordinary.
Certification, honestly: our standard builds carry CE and RoHS. UL/ETL for North America and ENEC for European tender work are quoted case by case — tell us the destination in the first email and we will price the correct bill of materials instead of shipping a sample that fails inspection later.
Next step: send us the internal dimensions of the case, the mounting height available, what is being displayed and the destination country — request a quote here and we will size the beam angle, colour temperature and driver before we send a sample.
